YOUR Business Isn't About You

Many people believe that starting their own business is the clearest path to “freedom.”

That they won’t have to take orders from a boss ever again.

That they won’t have to answer to anyone.

That THEIR business is about THEM.

If only.

I’ve had the complete privilege of working for others for my entire life, but not as an employee.

But as a business owner.

When you start “your” business, you learn very quickly that “your” business will only grow if you build it for (almost) everyone EXCEPT you.

Take care of your employees, and it will grow.

Take care of your co-founders, and it will grow.

Take care of your customers and clients, and it will grow.

Take care of your investors, your bankers, your board, your accountants, and your lawyers, and it will grow.

In an ironic twist, “your” business will begin to serve you only after you make it serve (almost) everyone except you.
